A Note on International Workers Day

Express coach conductors and chauffers, exotic corn/ripe plantain curators, millet-porridge cuisine moderators - these are my ideal workers-of-the-year, the very fuel of the Ghanaian economy.

It is said that the fundamentals of a fundamental concept is the most absolute fundamental. With the trotro mate securing your place ahead of the traffic, the hausa kooko seller providing the means to break your fast (mind you she is not permitted to skip a day at work, never), and the Kofi Brokeman seller handling your lunch, what or who can be more fundamental to the Ghanaian workforce than these three?

...what or who can be more fundamental to the Ghanaian workforce than these three?

Paradoxically, like many unsung heroes in the Ghanaian workforce, the value of the Ghanaian worker is most at times determined by the wrong people, and by this I am not talking about my dear kooko seller, because she makes 3x more than the lower half of average corporate workers in Ghana. Don't even get me started on the waakye sellers.

We will deal with financial inclusion and the not-so-good money management of Amelia and her waakye very soon, but for now, corporate Ghana needs to revisit the salary transparency conversation.

The minimum monthly cost of living in Accra stands at approximately GHS 4,000. Now a large number of the population have probably never spent this amount in a month before, but go ahead and consider the minimum monthly salary, which is approximately GHS 1,200 in the corporate space. I do not know how Ghanaians cough up the GHS 3,000 deficit to survive, but just think about it.

At Looksharp Global, the goal is simple. By giving job-seekers, especially school-leavers and entry-level workers all the information they need, even the salary they should be asking for, we will be heading towards a more balanced standard of living. By adding to the value of job seekers and making them aware of their cumulative value, intrinsic self image as well as external motivation, primarily their salary, is piqued. The combination of these two will mean higher economic value for Africa.

Additionally, employers stand a better chance of providing a competitve salary through industry salary transparency, not to mention the unique metrics they can use to monitor employee satisfaction and growth. Looksharp Global adds the benefit of posting open job roles and managing applications on-site, so that the Ghanaian job market is even better served with richer value for all.

Fuel prices are running at full speed, Kalyppo is now 2 cedis (GHS 2) and your internet banking transactions are bleeding because of the newly introduced E-levy. One thing, however, remains the same, and it's probably your salary.
