Hollywood might have been on to something , because I remember watching movies like Ex-machina, Lucy and the Matrix , that showcased a world dominated by AI.
Of course at that time it seemed like something far-fetched and unrealistic - because, how do you expect me to believe that a car was moving without a driver or that I could have a full blown intellectual conversation with a computer (guilty,as charged).
It does not seem as far fetched any more and quite frankly if you told me today, that in a couple more years we would be seeing flying cars or mutant human beings created in a lab, I wont look at you like you just drank a full gallon of Vodka.
It has become increasingly clear over the past couple of years that the future is tech and belongs to those who can bridge the gap between cutting edge technologies and human -centered applications that drive this new industrial revolution (4IR). If you are already a Tech Bro or Sis, congratulations-you won. What does this mean for everyone else? And how do we ensure we're not locked behind the gates of a technology dominated world.

I am pretty sure in the next decade wanting to be a “doctor”, “lawyer” or any of the other traditional professions that exist now would almost be like saying you want to be a “blacksmith”- Okay maybe not that drastic but they might no longer be the gold standard for career aspirations. Who knows, with the rate at which the tech scene is exploding we might be having our hospital consultations with an AI powered hologram or something of that sort.
As students and young professionals it is necessary that we understand the ever evolving landscape of work and equip ourselves with the relevant skills; that is why in this week’s article, we have combed the web and are basing our discussion on The future of work: the top 5 emerging careers in the new era, what we need to do to be ready for the years and decades to come and how non-techies can remain relevant.
All through the article I have linked some relevant resources that provide additional learning opportunities.
According to the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) 2023 report on the future of Jobs, It is estimated that the career of AI and Machine Learning Specialist is expanding significantly quicker than any other field. “The majority of the fastest growing roles are technology-related roles. AI and Machine Learning Specialists top the list of fast-growing jobs…”
AI is no longer something we hope to see in the far future, it is here now and is already shaping the dynamics of industries. The demand for AI skills is exploding, and it’s only going to get bigger. But here’s the thing—AI isn’t going to eliminate jobs, at least not completely, it will transform them. It will create an environment where humans and machines work collaboratively to solve problems in ways that once seemed impossible.
Data is the new oil - This phrase that has become popular does not just mean that Data is valuable but just like oil, if it is not refined it cannot be used.Getting useful insights from a vast pool of information requires a special skillset, and this is where the Data Engineer/ Scientist comes in. The roles of Data Scientist and Data Engineer may overlap but they serve different functions. A Data Scientist interpretes and models data to solve complex problems, often using statistical and machine learning techniques while a Data Engineer builds the infrastructure needed to collect, store, and process this data efficiently.
The same way you will install security doors, or cameras in your house to defend against criminals, is the same way digital protection is necessary to guard against cybercriminals. As our reliance on digital technologies is feeding the explosion of tech and the digital space, there is an ever growing demand for cybersecurity specialists who can safeguard systems from the risk of cyber threats. To put it in perspective- think of a cybersecurity specialist as the bouncer at your favorite club who prevents bad vibes and chaos from getting in.
Everyday we are hearing news of one crisis or the other, fires in Brazil, floods in Bangladesh, Polluted waterbodies in Ghana. Environmental crises are escalating globally, and having an overall negative effect on the climate, however according to the United Nations, this crisis is “a war we can win”. As the threats to the climate increase due to rapid urbanization amongst many other factors, there is an urgent need for more sustainable solutions. The role of Sustainability and Green Technology Experts is to work on developing and implementing eco-friendly technologies and practices to mitigate environmental damage while promoting sustainable development. Their main aim is to design strategies that reduce humanity's ecological footprint.
Technology is becoming more integrated into our daily lives, the way we interact with machines is crucial. This is where Human-Machine Interaction Designers, also known as UX/UI (User Experience/User Interface) designers, come in. Their job is to create seamless, intuitive interfaces that allow us to engage with technology effortlessly. This career is an interesting one because it focuses on bridging the gap between the user and the technology. It combines creativity, psychology, and tech skills to ensure that machines are designed with human needs in mind. Making an already complex field like tech more easy and enjoyable to use is valuable and is creating a huge demand for those who understand both sides of the interaction—human behavior and machine capabilities.
Lifelong Learning: Technology is evolving fast, and staying relevant means continuing to learn throughout your career. Whether it's by gaining certifications, attending seminars, or simply staying informed about the latest trends, the willingness to grow with the tech landscape will be critical.
Stay Curious: Don’t be afraid of new technology. Experiment with AI tools, explore data sets, or even dip your toes into coding. The more you understand the digital world, the more relevant you will remain.Even if you aren’t a tech expert, basic digital skills are non-negotiable. Learn how data is shaping your industry, understand the fundamentals of AI, or take a cybersecurity course. Free online platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning offer accessible courses on a variety of subjects to get you started.
Find Your Niche: Tech is vast, and there’s room for everyone. Whether it’s digital marketing, tech ethics, or automation consulting, find the intersection between your passion and technology.Roles like policy-making, marketing, law, and education are being transformed by technology, but they are still crucial. You don’t need to become a programmer to thrive in these spaces. For example, tech companies need people who understand ethics, regulation, and communication. Think about specializing in tech-adjacent roles that still require a deep understanding of human behavior and societal needs.
Collaborate with Tech: Even if you’re not tech-savvy, collaborating with tech teams in your industry will help you remain adaptable and relevant.he tech world still requires creativity and human insight. If you’re a designer, artist, or communicator, think about how you can help translate complex technological solutions into experiences that people can easily connect with. This is where fields like UX/UI design, ethical AI, and digital content creation come into play.
The future is technology-driven, yes. But at its core, the future still belongs to people—people who can adapt, learn, and bridge the gap between cutting-edge tech and human needs. In this new industrial revolution, it’s not about being a “tech bro” or “tech sis,” it’s about being ready for the inevitable fusion of technology into every part of our lives. Stay ready, stay curious, and most importantly, keep learning.
